Elsewedy Electric Indonesia Delivers Landmark High-Voltage Auto-Transformer Project in Spain

Elsewedy Electric Indonesia has successfully delivered a 275 MVA, 400/132/30 kV three-phase auto-transformer for a substation project in Zaragoza, Spain, marking a major milestone in the company’s international portfolio and reinforcing its expertise in delivering high-capacity transmission solutions.

 

The project represents the first and highest-voltage three-phase transformer ever manufactured by Elsewedy Electric Indonesia. Delivered under a fully integrated scope encompassing detailed engineering, manufacturing, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), procurement, packaging, Ex-Works delivery, on-site installation, and commissioning, the transformer was designed to meet stringent international standards while addressing the technical challenges of high-voltage operation, advanced insulation coordination, and large-scale manufacturing. The electrical design incorporated advanced dielectric withstand calculations and electric field simulations to ensure optimal insulation coordination, long-term reliability, and full compliance with client specifications for the 400-kV high-voltage side.

 

Weighing approximately 287 tons when filled with oil, the transformer features a reinforced tank structure, enhanced maintenance accessibility, and an optimized cooling system to support high-load operation. In line with client requirements, it is equipped with advanced monitoring and control technologies, including continuous moisture monitoring, a remote-capable On-Load Tap Changer (OLTC), and an Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) for precise voltage control. Additionally, all accessories comply with UNE-EN 50216 standards, ensuring the highest levels of safety, reliability, and product quality. The transformer also successfully passed all Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) on the first attempt, validating the robustness of its design and manufacturing quality.

 

Completed on schedule, the project highlights Elsewedy Electric Indonesia’s strong engineering capabilities and disciplined project execution. Despite the logistical complexity of transporting the 287-ton transformer using a multi-axle drop-deck trailer while navigating route restrictions, load distribution requirements, and regulatory compliance, all project milestones were delivered on time, even amid ongoing global transformer material supply constraints. Building on successful projects across Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and Europe, the company continues to strengthen its position as a trusted provider of advanced transmission infrastructure supporting reliable and resilient power networks worldwide.
